6 x most frequently used Driving Routines

Using these driving routines is important not only for safety reasons, but crucial to passing the driving test.

1) DSSSM routine

  • Also known as Cockpit drill
  • Doors, Seat, Steering, Seatbelt and Mirrors (in this order)

2) GOSH routine

  • Gear
    • D-drive – ‘Moving the car off’ from either a stationary parked position, or in traffic.
    • R-reverse – Reversing the car
    • L-low – ‘Moving off’ up or down a steep hill
  • Observe
  • Signal
  • Handbrake

3) MSM routine

  • Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre

4) SCALP routine

5) MSPSL routine

  • Mirror, Signal, Position, Speed and Look
  • Most frequently used routine.
  • Used for approaching all junctions, including roundabouts and traffic lights.

6) LADA routine

  • Look, Assess, Decide, Act
  • (Used for judging speed and distance of oncoming traffic)
  • The LADA driving routine is an extension of the MSPSL routine, and helps learner drivers to assess traffic and potential hazards just before traffic systems and deciding when it’s safe to go or to stay.
  • Ask yourself…. “If I was a pedestrian would I go?”

7) SSSS (four S’s)

  • Never make other drivers: Slow down, Stop, Swerve or swear
